What Diameter Should a Handrail Have?
The ideal diameter for a handrail for stairs is typically between 30mm and 40mm. However, there is no legal requirement for the correct size of a handrail rope. We offer handrail ropes in various sizes—30mm, 35mm, and 40mm. For custom projects or unique preferences, we also sell smaller and larger sizes, such as 20mm or 50mm.
Do You Need a Handrail Rope or Stair Railing for Outdoor Use?
All of our handrail ropes are suitable for outdoor use. They are weather-resistant, UV-resistant, and durable. For mounting, however, we recommend our stainless steel rope holders and end caps as they are weatherproof. Other materials like chrome or brass can tarnish.
How Do I Best Measure the Handrail?
First, determine the starting and ending points and mark the positions. Then measure the distance between these points to determine the length. For handrails that turn a corner, it's helpful to use painter's tape to outline the route, making measurement easier. Now it’s up to your personal preference—do you want the rope to lie taut in the holders or have a slight sag? If you want a slight sag, we recommend adding 5-10% more rope to the usable length.
How Do I Install a Handrail Rope?
We recommend a distance of 80-100cm between the rope holders to ensure handrail stability. The end caps are slid on and fixed with the included set screw to prevent the rope from slipping. You can easily shorten the handrail yourself: wrap tape around the rope, use a sharp knife with a smooth blade (kitchen or utility knife), and cut through—done! At What Height Should a Handrail Be Installed?
The ideal height for a handrail rope, depending on body size and personal preference, is between 80 and 115cm from the floor (measured vertically from the front edge of the step to the top edge of the handrail). We recommend a height of 90-95cm.
On Which Side Should a Handrail Be Installed?
Handrails are typically installed on the right side of the stairs, as viewed going down, because most people are right-handed.
How Many Holders Does a Handrail Rope Need?
You can freely choose the number of rope holders and fittings based on your preferences. We recommend a wall mounting distance of 80-100cm for optimal stability.
